First off, thank you for not turning your back on them. Let’s just take a minute to appreciate that. They probably are just needing more time to settle into who they are. I’d just ask them what pronouns they want to be referred to with, and if they have a name they want to go by or try out. As for understanding, I’ll try to think of an example that makes sense.

Imagine you park your car in a parking lot. You come back, get in your car, but you realize it isn’t your car. You try to get out, but you’re locked in. Everyone else insists “No, this is your car. It’s the same color, make, model.” But on the inside, that isn’t your coffee in the cup holder and the air freshener isn’t yours. It isn’t your car. That’s how it feels kinda.

I’ve played mentor to a few trans people. Been a while but I can dust off the gloves and see what I can find.
