In the 90s we were actively shuned by the nerds and geeks.
The kids talking about the latest episode of TNG would cross to the other side of the street.
We had a nerdy teacher on staff
It was only like a 6-8 people club at its peak
For some kids it was something to do while waiting for cross country practice to start
For me I usually had Speech and Debate practices right before or right after game
I was in band, tennis, track, and was begged to join the debate team, but I never did
My senior year another teacher actually started a second club for a zombie apocalypse setting with pathfinder. That was fun too
I was on the Speech side, not debate personally
Though if there was a tournament and they needed a few more entrants to get more kids qualified to Nats or something, I'd warmbody a debate event (losing on purpose) to get those numbers met
I’m just very good at debating points. Especially whenever I actually invest time into the subject
My event was humorous interpretation ✨
Satire usually did very poorly, but I was going to State and Nationals with David Sedris pieces lol, so I was able to make Satire work for the event
Normally it's "do a silly piece with a lot of character voices"
But I was doing angry one man shows like Santaland Diaries lmao

My coach said I broke a mold. Graduated with the most scored points in our school history for Speech, and third overall including the debaters
(the two record breakers for the debate side were also in my graduating class ✨)
