I don't have a contention against that. But it is also said in the NT, that Jesus was made flesh. He is God but took on flesh so He could die for our sins. Hebrews 9:22 says, without the shedding of the blood, there is no remission of sins. He is the perfect sacrifice—God Himself.

He is not just a man who gained a special favor from God but He is God. Colossians 1:15 says, Jesus is the image of the invisible God and in verse 17 of the same chapter says, He is before all things. And in John 8:58 Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I am."

All this debating when you can just ask a qualified priest instead …

No, God is immortal so he can't die (1 Tim 1:17). The Bible says that God sacrificed his son for our sins, not himself (John 3:16). Hebrews 1 distinguishes Jesus from God all throughout. The image of God is not God. Jesus is claiming to be the Messiah there, not God.
