Catholics follow the bishop of Rome as the true apostolic church and have many traditions they follow. They notably hold church authority above the authority of the Bible, in contrast to Protestants

And then protestants heretics they split from Catholics after that . That's why they are called protestants as they protested against Catholic church which tells us that at first it was Catholic church . Not protestants one
